(Press F10 to return to the Help Index Page)
(or F4 to return to the previous view)
<HYPERTEXT>
Hypertext is text that has been cross-referenced such that one part of the
text (a "trigger") points to another part (a "target") which contains more
detailed information about the subject at hand.
<TRIGGER VS. TARGET>
A TRIGGER is a word or phrase about which there is more information
somewhere else in the document(s). It is like a springboard from which you
leap to "target" text containing more information. For more about triggers
see Defining A Trigger
A TARGET is identical to its corresponding trigger (except its delimiters)
and is either part of a block of text or the title of a page which has
detailed information about a word or phrase ("trigger") somewhere else in
the document(s). For more about targets see Defining A Target
For a general discussion of this topic see Links Between Files[?BREF.BRS]
(Press F10 to return to the Help Index Page)
(or F4 to return to the previous view)
<DEFINING A TRIGGER>
There are two ways to define a trigger depending on whether the search for
the target text will be a linear search or a lookup search.
1. TO DEFINE A LINEAR SEARCH TRIGGER:
- Define the keyword trigger start.end delimiters [/J:]
(see Defining Parameters and Hypertext Delimiters)
- Place those delimiters around the trigger word or phrase.
- If the corresponding "target" text is in another file you may
place the name of that file after the trigger inside brackets [].
Precede the filename with a ? mark if you want it to be hidden.
For example <trigger>[otherfile]
<trigger>[?hiddenfile]
2. TO DEFINE A LOOKUP SEARCH TRIGGER:
- Define the lookup trigger start.end delimiters [/K:]
(see Defining Parameters and Hypertext Delimiters)
- Place those delimiters around the trigger word or phrase.
- If the corresponding "target" text is in another file you may
place the name of that file after the trigger inside brackets [].
Precede the filename with a ? mark if you want it to be hidden.
For example <trigger>[otherfile]
<trigger>[?hiddenfile]
(Press F10 to return to the Help Index Page)
(or F4 to return to the previous view)
<DEFINING A TARGET>
1. Define the target start.end delimiters.
(see Defining Parameters and Hypertext Delimiters)
2. Place those delimiters around the target word or phrase.
Note: It is a good idea to separate targets and the text associated with
them from other target text with a page break (ASCII code 12).
(Press F10 to return to the Help Index Page)
(or F4 to return to the previous view)
<LINEAR SEARCH>
This type of search reads through the document from start to finish (or
from the cursor to finish) looking for target text matching the trigger.
see also Normal Search[?BREF.BRS]
<LOOKUP SEARCH>
This is a very fast search which depends on the document having been
specially prepared for it. For more information see Keyword Searches[?BREF.BRS].

For example: \PCW\MYFILE.DOC
A:MYFILE.DOC
see also Loading Files[?BREF.BRS] into PC-Browse
You can also get a listing of files matching a certain file specification,
e.g., a directory, then select a file to load from the list. For information

Location markers save the file you're in plus your location in that file.
They are saved across files so that by pressing F4 you can go back to the
previous location even if it is in another file. Location markers are also
set by the following operations.
- Grey+ search forward (successfully) for text at the F9 Find prompt.
- Grey- search backward (successfully) for text at the F9 Find prompt.
- F9 F2 lookup search (successful) on text at the F9 Find prompt.
- F9 F3 keyword search (successful) on text at the F9 Find prompt.
